Hi Guys ... I'm back and finally able to sit and write a bit of something I found very interesting .. it seems in Providence, R.I there lives in a hospice a cat named Oscar .. who had been adopted by the nurses as a campanion to the patients with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other illnesses. ... 6 months after his adoption the staff noticed Oscar made rounds of his own ... checking in on all the patients .... the thing that is amazing people is the fact that Oscar senses when a patient is about to pass away ... they say he jumps on the bed and stays with the patient and comforts them until they expire ... he always does this within the last 4 hours of thier life ... some people are finding comfort in this knowing Oscar is with that person in thier last hours and they don't die alone ... there was only 1 family that didn't want Oscar present and sent him away ... they said Oscar was very upset ... pacing the hall and meowing outside the door ... so what do you think? ... do you think its a good idea to have Oscar around ? ... and do you think it's a comfort for those in thier last hours ?
... I myself think it's a blessing to those who benefit from this little angel's comfort in thier final hours and he should be able to continue his job as the little comforter of those who might otherwise be alone in death ... let me know how you feel ...
hmmm. I LOVE the idea that this cat is comforting people, but I hate to be the downer...
having a cat around terminally ill elderly people is a really bad idea! [let me start by saying I have a cat, she's my princess, and I love more than anyone should love a furry feline.] but... animals aren't particularly sanitary and even hospice should be a sterile environment to ensure these elderly folks have the safest, longest, highest quality life.
I can't imagine how many of these people have upper-respiratory issues, considering how many in their generation smoked.
all that said, I'm sure the cat is a blessing to many of them, so I'll shut up. ;-)
I think that it is a wonderful thing. Having gone through quite a few deaths that required visits to Hospice of Dayton I think that the comfort of an animal or human is much needed. I think hospice is a wonderful place I can say enough about it. For the most part people know that hospice is usually something that happens within the last few weeks or months of someone's life. When the doctors seem to think that there is nothing else they can do. Like I said for the most part.
Having a cat that can comfort someone is this time of their life is a wonderful thing. I do think that it is totally up to the person staying there and the family.
I really enjoyed the dogs that came to visit at hospice. I seemed to brighten everyone up. I also enjoyed all the volunteers that work there. All the workers and staff are all angels. The main thing with hospice is whatever makes you comfortable.
